Skipping oil changes is one of the most expensive mistakes car owners make. Here's what happens inside your engine when oil breaks down — and how to avoid it.
What Engine Oil Actually Does
Engine oil does far more than lubricate moving parts. It also cools components the cooling system can't reach, cleans microscopic debris from engine surfaces, prevents corrosion, and cushions the metal-on-metal contact that happens thousands of times per minute inside your engine.
Over time, oil breaks down from heat, contamination, and oxidation. It loses its viscosity (ability to flow properly), accumulates combustion byproducts, and becomes less effective at all of these critical functions. That's why regular changes are essential — not optional.
What Happens When You Skip Oil Changes
When oil breaks down and isn't replaced, several things happen in sequence. First, sludge begins to form — a thick, tar-like buildup that clogs oil passages and prevents oil from reaching critical engine components. Second, metal surfaces that aren't properly lubricated begin to wear faster. Third, heat builds up in areas that should be cooled by oil flow.
The end result is accelerated engine wear, reduced performance, and eventually, catastrophic engine failure. A new engine can cost $3,000–$8,000 or more. An oil change costs $49.99. The math is straightforward.
How Often Should You Change Your Oil in Houston?
Houston's extreme summer heat accelerates oil breakdown faster than in most U.S. cities. For conventional oil, we recommend every 3,000–5,000 miles. For synthetic oil, every 5,000–7,500 miles is appropriate for most vehicles.
If you do a lot of short-trip driving (under 10 miles per trip), tow frequently, or drive in stop-and-go traffic regularly, lean toward the shorter interval. Short trips don't allow the engine to fully warm up, which means more moisture and fuel contamination in the oil.
Synthetic vs. Conventional Oil: Which Is Right for You?
Synthetic oil offers better protection at extreme temperatures, lasts longer between changes, and provides better performance in high-stress conditions. It costs more per change but typically extends the interval enough to offset the price difference.
Conventional oil is perfectly adequate for older vehicles with lower mileage and normal driving conditions. Our technicians will recommend the right oil type and viscosity for your specific vehicle, driving habits, and budget — without upselling you on something you don't need.
What's Included in Our Oil Change
Every oil change at Liberty Auto Repair includes up to 5 quarts of oil, a new oil filter, a tire pressure check, and a multi-point vehicle inspection. We check your fluid levels, belts, hoses, brakes, and lights — and we'll flag anything that needs attention without pressuring you to fix it on the spot.
Oil changes start at $49.99 for conventional oil. Synthetic oil changes are also available. We serve all makes and models — domestic, import, and European vehicles.
